I would be lying if I said I knew what authentic Indian food tastes like, but what I found in Trader Joe's frozen section didn't disappoint.
Pakoras are Indian-style fritters filled with potatoes, vegetables and spices. The first time I had pakoras was while visiting my family in England. My grandma and I told ourselves that we would make them once we got back to the States, but never got to it. So when we saw the packages of pakoras at Trader Joe's, we couldn't resist. Although the pakoras weren't as wonderful as my family's own, I was quite impressed. The Trader Joe's pakoras came with tamarind dipping sauce. Although the sauce wasn't terrible, it was too mild for my liking (I am used to Trini-style Chatak tamarind chutney). The pakoras did have some Indian spices present, but not too overpowering. All in all, I enjoyed them and would have them again. I give Trader Joe's Vegetable Pakoras 4 out of 5 stars.
The Masala Burger at Trader Joe's reminds me so much of the filling inside the vegetable samosas they sell at my local Indian grocery store. The burger is a pretty good meat alternative, as it contains potatoes and vegetables like green beans, bell peppers and carrots. There is definitely Indian spices present in the burger, but I personally wished it wasn't so mild. I craved the spiciness that I normally associate with Indian food. I give Trader Joe's Vegetable Masala Burger 3 out of 5 stars.
What I love about Trader Joe's is its uniqueness. The store has a seemingly endless collection of novelty items and cuisines from across the globe. Every corner of the aisles are filled with intriguing goods difficult to obtain elsewhere.
