This week's poetry slam is a special one! It features the spoken word of my grandmother, whose birthday happens to be tomorrow. Happy Birthday Grandma!
My grandmother, as well as most of my family, is from Trinidad & Tobago. Although relatively small, the sister islands are teeming with diverse people. Our culture and cuisine is a mass combination of African, Indian, European, South American, Chinese, Middle Eastern and other influences.
Trinis know and embrace diversity! Much like the “melting pot” of America, Trinidad's ethnic culture is mixed like callaloo, a Trinidadian soup made with okro (okra) and dasheen (taro) leaves.
I suppose growing up in a culture influenced by so much diversity is what gave me a passion for it. Trinidad is a beautiful example of how various cultures are capable of cultivating a rich, united national identity. I am so proud of my heritage! [Read more…]
